Ready to start your transformation?

If you are:

finding you and/or your dog’s quality of life is suffering

thinking it’s not safe to have visitors to the house

missing out on walks because you’re afraid of what may happen

dealing with a dog who is stressed on a daily basis by people, places, noises or just the world around them

having to keep your dog separated from other household residents

afraid of your dog getting upset or frustrated

then it’s time for help.

Obedience training is teaching the dog to speak human.

Behavior training is teaching the human to speak dog.

When faced with a serious behavior problem, teaching “stay” and “come” are not the solution. Obedience never hurts, but addressing your dog’s underlying emotion that is causing the concerning behavior is the only path to long term and effective change.

The Behavior Change Roadmap

  • Assessing the dog and situation will help come up with a realistic plan for the owner and trainer.

This will help you understand the amount of risk involved in working on the issue, where the behavior is stemming from and what needs to be done to help.

An honest discussion about any prognosis concerns is also had.

  • The first step to mitigating behavior concerns is to not allow the dog to continue practicing the behavior.

At the consultation, a management plan will be developed to get you and your best friend some immediate relief. This includes changing the environment, as well as what the humans do, to decrease the likelihood of the behavior occurring. The top priority is keeping everyone safe, when that it is a concern.

  • Training skills and behavior modification exercises will be taught outside of the problematic context initially.

For example, a dog who resource guards bones must be taught to “drop” things first that he wouldn’t think of guarding (rubber toy).

  • Once skills have been built and reinforced, now it is time to work them in the problematic scenarios.

You will learn how to do so safely by reading your dog’s body language and the environment to help your dog be successful.

Consultation - The primary focus for the initial consultation is steps 1 & 2. Minimizing further rehearsal of the behavior, evaluating where the behavior is stemming from and building a training plan. Some behavior modification exercises may be given.

Follow up lessons - This is where the heavy training and implementation (3&4) comes in. Skills are taught through positive reinforcement and then integrated into the problematic scenarios.
